Cheer Squad 2008: Off to a Good Start

Judge Cheerleaders are the spirit leaders of the school. Every Friday they come out to the football games, cheer their hearts out and get the crowd pumped up.

"This year's group of young ladies are incredibly talented, hard working, and supportive…The Judge Squad is off to an excellent start and I look forward to watching the squad continue to grow during the year," says Natosha Washington, in her fourth year of Cheer coaching at Judge.

The weekend of Homecoming on the 26th and 27th is the Cheerleaders next event, but you can see the Cheerleaders at any home football game.

If you want to try out for next year's Cheerleading squad, tryouts are in the end of April. They will announce specific dates closer to the time of tryouts. In the meantime, Coach Washington recommends you stay in shape by doing P.E., Dance, and Yoga because they work on your strength, coordination, and flexibility. Coach Washington also would like girls to "focus on [their] academics!" She likes good students.

If you have any questions about Cheerleading, you can talk to Coach Washington, or Erin O'Brien and Kristie Brown, the Cheerleading Captains.

Cheerleaders are Working Hard

Our cheerleaders are working hard everyday after school, whether it be for the upcoming Bulldog Boogie or halftime shows for football games. Right now they are involved in teaching the younger kids their Bulldog Boogie dances, which started on Tuesday, 10/2. The performances will be during halftime of the upcoming football game against Wasatch this Friday, 10/5. Other than that they keep on practicing every day after school and on Friday they have team dinners with the football team. Keep cheering hard!

Cheerleaders Looking Forward to a Year of Change

While the vets are getting used to the changes during and outside of practice, the rookies are learning the ropes for the first time. Everything from the coaches to the mascot has taken a change for the better. The new coach Megan Lindsey has been a guest choreographer for Judge dance company. In addition to her hip-hop pieces she is now she's choreographing dances for the cheerleaders. Because of the lack of returning seniors, the captains of this year's cheer squad are seniors Jenny Dabrowski, Brie Marron, Makyla Grovenburg, and junior Kristi Brown. There is no specific captain for one job, instead it's a group effort for the dances, cheers and stunts.
Contrary to last year's squad the seniors of this year's squad are the minority. There is less seniority and the squad as a whole is a lot closer. Every girl is a full time cheerleader; there are no alternates and the mascot is not going to be a cheerleader. For basketball season Lewis Walker will be Brutus the Bulldog and with Mele Vaisima in Idaho the school needs a volunteer with as much enthusiasm and spunk as her. If you're interested in being the school's beloved Bulldog, talk to Natosha Washington.
